Ideal Classic boiler/engineer utter misery!

HI all,

I wonder if anyone could help as right now things are just miserable.

I have had on going issues with my boiler Ideal Classic LXFF &FF fanned flue gas boiler FF230, the latest is no heating for the past month despite paying out over £400, and previously getting ripped off for a further £600 (that a nice little holiday right there - as I say utter misery!)

The boiler, produces hot water, but radiators are stone cold, I have tried everything:

New thermostat
System drained and a new Honeywell 3 port valve fitted
New gas valve
Fan replaced

I then went on You Tube and found that you could slide a switch to get a defective motorised value temporarily working again, this however did not work and ultimately meant that in addition to no heating there was no hot water as well….

Please can someone help, the first engineer was a crook and ripped me off, the second guy is a family friend and its now all very difficult as he has charged me £400 plus and nothing is working and I don't think he knows how to fix it, I can't carry on like this…I'm throwing fortune at this and getting no where (misery!)

Can anyone help at all….thank you very much

I'm looking for one of these!

I am no engineer but have mates who think this is probably the easiest boiler out there to fix, it is as the model describes a classic.

What about having BG out for their one off fix deal?

I was going to suggest this. Suddenly that BG Service contract sounds cheap..
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Do not hand over another penny to anyone until you have satisfied yourself that they have rectified the fault you have asked then to repair.

Agreed. You shouldn't have to pay twice for the work to be done properly. Has your engineer tested all the electrical components in the boiler including this:

Get a better engineer. On a classic it wont know the difference between a deamand for heat or hot water so your fault is on the controls. If it works for water then your fault is on ch controls. These consist of clock, thermostat and diverter valve. If youve replaced all (properly) exept the clock I'd be starting there and giving the wiring a good check with a multimeter.

As above, if the boiler is producing Domestic Hot Water, there is no problem with the boiler. The issue is with the signal to open the heating valve. Download a Honeywell S Plan wiring diagram and get an electrician to investigate why you are not getting voltage to the valve. Is room thermostat turned down, and not calling for heat, is programmer set for on times an not been left in the off position??

Just check there is no gate valve / isolation valve on the pipes to the heating or on the return pipe.

Thank you all, I have literally made myself poorly from stressing about it!

BG is extortionate but if it gets fixed it could be the better option or just buy a new boiler……

You rely on them so much but when they go wrong!!!!

If I ever get this fixed, I'm getting insurance!

How would buying a new boiler help when we have already established that the boiler itself is working perfectly well?
Get the 'friend' back and ask him to do the job you've already paid him for. This involves proper fault finding, not just blindly swapping out components (at your expense) in the hope that something might work.
It's not exactly rocket science for him to check the voltage output to the 3-port valve.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Im a bit puzzled, why when both guys had "Mended" the boiler did you not fire the boiler up & make them wait to see if the rads heated up? before paying them!
