Ninth Anniversary 1,000 Posts Name Dropper I've been Money Tipped!
So i've been offered a new job & i've said i will take it. I will hand my notice in with my current employer tomorrow, but having never done this before i don't really know how you go about it. Despite the many negatives, i still want to leave on good terms in the event i may one day want/need to return.

I was thinking something like...
Dear COLOR=RoyalBlue][I]who do i put here? It's a family business. There's the boss-boss. There's a few directors who are all related to each other. Do i name them all or just the boss-boss?[/I][/COLOR

This letter is to notify you that i have decided to resign from my position as [my job title].

I understand that my contract requires me to work one weeks notice so i believe my final day here will be COLOR=RoyalBlue][I]Friday 20th? - what's the correct date if i give 1 weeks notice beginning tomorrow?[/I][/COLOR

I would like to take the time to thank you for the faith you had in me and opportunities given to me during my time here and i am extremely grateful for this. I wish the company all the best in the future and if there's anything i can do to make this transition easier then please don't hesitate to let me know.

I also have questions beyond the letter really...

I'm not bragging here but i'm the best & most reliable in my department. I take on the majority of the 'crappy' work and i never complain. I may not be happy but i keep it to myself & just do it.

Customers have called up to praise & recommend me.

If there's a technical job with the customers, they always select me to do it.

Just 3 examples.

In the past i know for 100% sure that when similar people have come to leave the company, the boss has offered them more money to stay & wanted to know why they are leaving & where they are going.

** What do i do if this happens with me, as it very likely will?

They will be unable to match the offer i have been given.

PROS & CONS of new job...

PROS:::

* 25p more per hour for 40 hours & then time & half after that (at my current job there is no overtime rate. It's a flat rate. For those who do get overtime rate it's time & a few pence. So if you're £8/hr then your overtime would be about £8.95 after 40hrs.

* I'm a driver so the loads i take out at my current place can really be quite ridiculous & the load order dictates that it often has to be unloaded in a very awkward order. At the new job the materials carried make the job very simple indeed.

* Relaxed attitude regarding holidays (or so the boss stated). At my current place you ask for a holiday & they let you know last minute & make a big song & dance that you asked.

* My new boss knows my current bosses & says he's well aware with how they work & he doesn't agree with it. He pays people what they're worth & doesn't pay them as little as he possibly can. He also says if you treat him with respect (and keeping your vehicle tidy etc is part of treating him with respect (no problem!)) then he will treat you with respect. I like this attitude.

* 2 week shut down at Xmas. My current place all you get is Sunday's off.

* They don't like to work Saturday's & if you do then it's very very rare. My current place is open every Saturday. I don't like them & i've actually said this. For the past 2 years i've worked more Saturday's than anyone in my department on each year. Not a lot more, but more. You also get told you're working a Saturday (IF you are) last minute.com on a Friday night - so you can't plan anything.

* Distance work & you get 2 loads per day & left to your devices with one boss. My current place is about 5 'bosses' & you have to please them all & in the end you obviously can't & it's always your fault.

* Class 1 work. This is why i took my test. My current place is constantly alternating between class 1 & class 2 work.

* About £100 more per week in the back pocket

* The line manager of the loading department where i am is in his 40s but acts like he's in his teens. The most childish person you will ever meet (& no it's really not just me saying this. It's the whole company). I've dealt with my new employers many times & spoken to many of the guys there & they all appear great. This line manager i mention boils my blood up so bad i could easily thump the guy at times.

CONS:::

* Earlier starting time (but also earlier finishing time).
* Could result in less/no social life during the week due to requiring earlier bed time
* Am not back to base a lot, so am not seeing workmates regular. Yes i know i'm there to work but it's nice to interact with workmates face-to-face


So my current boss is obviously going to ask WHY i am leaving. I don't want to make it about how his company is so negative, so what would you say?

  • Hi, congratulations on the new job, I hope it works out for you. When handing in your notice, you address it to your supervisor/boss immediately superior to you. There's no need to write it to the absolute head honcho! Also, I would ensure it is within an envelope and handed in at the beginning of the working day.

    You absolutely do not need to justify why you're leaving or indicate how much you're going to be paid. If they say "Is there anything more we could do to keep you?" Be honest with YOURSELF and think hard what else they would need to offer you to keep you there if indeed you would ever entertain it. If not, then be polite and state there is nothing further you would like the company to offer you.

    If you need to give a weeks notice then your last day will be this coming Friday.

    I would suggest don't go into details - you have been offered a new job with better pay and hours which suit you personally better and thank them for the experience with them which let you secure the step up. No point in keeping it secret from what you say about the companies knowing each other.

    If they make a counter offer thank them for wanting to keep you, but you have made your mind up.

    Technically not.

    Notice begins the day after it is issued so if the OP hands it in on Monday, notice begins on the Tuesday so they should be prepared to work up to and including the following Monday.

    Obviously the employer may well be perfectly happy for Friday to be their last day but could insist on the full week's notice.
  • Yes, I stand corrected. To be fair, it's been ten years since I handed in my notice at my last job! As per the indirect website:

    "You and your employer can give notice on any day. Normally the notice period will run from the start of the following day. For example, if you give notice on a Monday, your notice period will start on the Tuesday and will finish at the end of Monday.
    You should read your contract of employment. If it lays out a different process for when notice can be given or when your notice period will run, you and your employer must follow the agreement in your contract."

  • Oh right. I thought i would've directed it to the main man, the owner of the company (he isn't some guy sat in a corner somewhere where you only see him when summoned - he's very hands on).

    So it's just to my line manager? That really surprises me because really at the end of the day he's only a small fish just like myself.


    There is also nothing they could offer me to stay. The money they would have to offer me they simply wouldn't offer me & that's a cert. I also couldn't discuss THAT one with my line manager as he doesn't have the authority to discuss pay. It's only the main man who does that.


    And i don't really want to have to work a week on Monday. I know people in the past have handed their notice in on the Monday & they've been gone by the end of the week.

    We actually open Saturday's. Saturday's are different in that not all drivers are required. It's on a rota (of sorts) system. What do you think of me offering to work this Saturday in place of other drivers instead of the Monday?

    Or would you just write i the letter that your final day is Friday/Saturday & assume/hope they wont question this?
    Or should i put at the end that since i have obviously never done this before, if i have done anything incorrectly then could they please let me know what?

    If i calculate right then i have 3.33333 days (so 3 days basically then).

    So i guess shouldn't be a problem. You need to give a weeks notice for any days holiday anyway so should be good i'd have thought for the final day to be next Saturday.

    You round up for holidays not down and they do not have to let you take one of them days as part of the notice

    I just handed my notice in yesterday and said last day would be this sat the 21st but depends on their working week. If you only work mon to fri you could say last day be sunday judt cover your back. If I had holiday left bare in mind it would only be given to the accrued amount not the entitlement I'd rather have the holiday pay than days off to cover expenses between jobs but also working the days will give a top up as well. You could write two letters with different ending dates and when handing it in you could check if it is ok to finish on Friday. I'd hand it to the manager if possible as that will be better as they will know before line manager. It's best to hand in notice before telling colleagues as well.

    Quick question (not really relaxant to OP sorry!!)

    Do you accrue holiday during your notice period? As in if you get 24 days a year and hand in your notice on 31st march, to leave on 30th April, would you have 6 days or 8 days (obviously assuming none had been taken)
