End of tenancy - deposit

Hi


My gf and I have left our previous flat 3 weeks ago, we knew that there was some redecorating work to be done on the walls and have agreed to pay for that.


However, received a bit of shock when the landlord has provided an invoice for £475. He has also put in a claim for a £65 ironing board (!), which I have rejected, the inventory clerk incorrectly marked it as missing, but has not updated the report.


£475 to paint four walls, seems excessive and coupled with the £65 ironing board comes across as opportunistic.


Is that the normal process, to be presented with an invoice? I would have thought that quotes would have been provided first, I am used to searching for a few quotes and then get an agreement with whoever is paying the bill.


Quite agitated by the figure of £475! any advice appreciated

    Not normal, no. Dispute via the protection scheme holding the deposit.
    As a minimum they would expect to see ...
    evidence that you caused the damage (inventories),
    evidence that the repair cost is reasonable ( i.e. more than one quote),
    allowance made for age since last decorated (i.e. not new-for-old).
