I can't personally vouch for this Chinese offering but it does get pretty good independent reviews.

I've been using Qihoo Total Security for quite a while now. It works well. It uses the Bitdefender and Avira engines as well as its own. Not particularly light but not too bad. 3 processes showing in Task Manager totalling 34.3MB. It includes a sandbox too but I have found that Internet Explorer won't always start sandboxed. Firefox and Chrome are OK. Clean-up tools are included that can always be ingnored. I've run them out of interest on Windows 8.1 and they have not caused any problems.

A discussion about Qihoo Total Security here:

and one on Qihoo Internet Security:

The threads are very long and it might be best to skip to more recent pages to read what the latest versions are like.

I tend to have clamwin available, even if I have another installed.
Reason being that it does not run in the background as such, you choose which files to scan and when, only the updater will operate daily.

I have had an infection before that compromised the background AV programme, and was therefore not detected by it, although I had suspicions.
Clamwin picked it up as it seems to operate differently.

    Many thanks,
I have backed up my files now, I am also Barclay's on line customer, so that may help with Kaspersky. I have heard of Bitdefender, may be this is going to be useful.

I was trying to get some Streamlining, to watch cricket when I felt an attack coming on. The site asked me to upgrade my FLASH drivers to HD, and I clicked ok, I am glad it has not done much damage.

    seb

Thats probably an illegal streaming site loaded with banners and popups if its asking that question .
No AV will stop a user clicking on one of those links and downloading genuine but unwanted addons etc .

To avoid such problems, the OP could use sandboxing software and run the browser in a sandbox.

Or use Linux, avoid Java (and similar add-ons), and use script filtering (e.g. NoScript, RequestPolicy, etc.).

Just installed bit defender to see what I think an for the life of me cant find out how to actually initiate a scan?

I have google but the option it says to use isn't there, if I right click the icon it says 'full system scan' but when I click it it doesn't do anything.

How do I perform a scan?

It does automatic scans in the background, but, if you double click the icon to open the window up, there should be a scan button there?
I've got the paid for version and the scan button is there when it's open.

It's coming back to me slowly, I only had the free version a short while and I just let it do everything automatically in the background. I got the pro version free for a year by joining a tech site. The offers gone now.
If I remember rightly it did a full scan on installing.
I think if you go to any folder (including your main drive) in explorer, then right click it you get a bitdefender menu that includes scan.
There is also the online scan (HERE) that can be used. If you look under 'Key features' it can be downloaded as a browser extension or a widget.
