Bought a new laptop 3 weeks ago and paid an extra £20 for McAfee complete (?) for a year.
Switched on my laptop this morn and I'm getting hounded my side bar (mega deals) adverts and dodgy pop ups.
Went on live chat w McAfee and then called their helpline number who told me it's the result of some kind of update which hd changed my browser settings. Even thought I paid for a years cover to stop these things from happening apparently I'm not covered for help as its a "software issue" and they wane £49.99 for someone to fix it remotely
Can any of you nice people advise how I can fix this and stop it happening again? Thank you!

You could try running MalwareBytes and adwCleaner.
https://www.malwarebytes.org/
https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/1-adwcleaner/
In my opinion, a selection of free anti-malware products will probably keep you safer than a single paid-for antivirus.0 -
Just running IE. I haven't installed any additional tool bars etc or noticed anything wierd before today.
I'll try those links, thank you.0 -
Try AdBlock:
https://getadblock.com/
It works well for me on Chrome and Firefox.
Why on earth did you pay for MacFee when you got a free trial? Can you get your money back as it is a total waste of money."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

Development of AdBlock now happens behind closed doors. And the software has been caught phoning home and explicitly permitting some adverts, which is far from reassuring.
The unrelated AdBlock Plus, on the other hand, is open source and the source code and change log are publicly available.
Personally, I'd ditch AdBlock and switch to AdBlock Plus...

It may be an adblocker will sort your issues. If, however, you have something that needs to be removed, try Hitman Pro (30 day free trial). I've had issues recently whereby pop-up windows are being hijacked my adverts, and this has removed stuff that Malwarebytes & Adwcleaner have not detected.0 -
So... tick the box in the settings, then!
I wouldn't install any add-on without checking the settings anyway. I'd rather tick a box than allow secret, unpublished code to execute.0
