Adult Gap Year

Hi

Has anyone ever taken a Gap year now they are older and wiser and didn't get the chance when they were younger because like us you left school, got married, bought a house , raised a family etc - You know all the things you were told you should do :rotfl:

OH and l have decided that now is the time to see some of the world as he is being made redundant and my job will also end in a few months. So before we get old and decrepit and need looking after :rotfl: we should take off and see this big world of ours.

We have a few ideas of where we would like to go and just wonder where to start. We thought about an around the world ticket but don't really know too much about them and how they work (have tried our friend google but way too much info for my old brain).

So any help or ideas to help us on our way would be great.

    Go around the world?

One of my bucket list items is to do just that, either in one go or in stages!

Or you could aim for all 7 Continents, which = going around the world!

Yes: loads of people have done things like this...

For a 'round the world ticket' I suggest you visit an agent such as Trailfinders to talk through the various options... However, if you spend long enough in a particular region to see it properly you might find that you are tired of travel, so an 'open jaw' ticket to a region that attracts you might be all that you need.

I'd agree with Voyager, a few years ago I spent 4 months travelling around SE Asia (open jaw into HCMC and out of Bangkok) and by the end I was looking forward to getting home for a while. I also didn't do a gap year when I was young, perhaps at that age I could have coped more easily with constant travelling but I turned 50 while I was away and I suspect I didn't have the energy or stamina that I had 30 years earlier.

Yes, husband and I went in our mid 30s (six months in Latin America) , we met plenty of individuals and couples in their 50s and 60s
As suggested, Trailfinders or STA can help you get started. There are so many possible routes
  • (click here) That should tell you all you need about round the world fares.

Other than that, choose where to go, and look at things you can do around them. Tripadvisor is always a massive help.

It is an individual thing, but when I was about 24 I spent about six months travelling around Africa, and that was long enough for me. I met a few long-term travellers but they seemed really burnt out, no longer really enjoying the journey but worried about the process of returning home.
