My son has just had a quote from BG £5500 ! Its a tiny house. Its straight in the tiny living room tiny kitchen with tiny bathroom. Upstairs there is a few feet of landing and 2 small bedrooms.House was built early 1900. He just paid £950 to get a gas pipe into the house from just outside his house. He has a tiny front garden just big enough for those ugly waste bins.We know a plumber who said what ever BG quote he will do it half.

We just had a new combi boiler installed, with new gas pipe from the meter. Cost less than 2k all in from a local plumber/heating engineer. The boiler was an Ideal which comes with 10 year warranty. 3-5k seems expensive, so I'm assuming that's British Gas?

£3-5k was a ballpark figure by the engineer who condemned our boiler. He no longer fits boilers himself because of his bad back. However his guesstimate was based on the fact that our boiler will have to be moved to the garage or the loft (because of new regs) with extra piping involved. He suggested the whole system should be flushed and a filter fitted. As yet I haven't had any other engineers in to give a more accurate quote. There seemed no point really if I was going to wait until summer. Another factor in all this is we may move out when my lad finishes 6th form next July (2016) and goes off to Uni. There is little else keeping us to this area and my job is portable. So holding off for just a few more months might make the boiler guarantee seem more attractive to any new buyers. Plus it's a few more months without the extra cost being on the mortgage.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Go to the gas safe register and find three people on there. Get three quotes. Then you can see what's appropriate. I paid £1600 for a straight replacement, clean, filter added and ten-year warranty with considerable pipework required on the outside of the building. They ran through the boiler and key maintenance with me first. After-care has been immense, I got a check of my gas fires cheaper and a free service next year.
You can sometimes get a good deal in the summer, and it gives you the time to figure it out, get multiple quotes, find out any offers and arrange it for a time that suits you.
