Right, I will carry on with Avast for now then.
I have myself used AVG on every of my computers for years too, and lately I am using AVG on my mobile phones as well. I don't know why it misbehaved all of a sudden.
It started asking me to restart at every boot up, and today it has been freezing every time I tried to start a scan. The icon in the task bar was showing that it was scanning the laptop, but when I tried to get to the scanning window I had only part of that window showing on top of the AVG interface. So I uninstalled this version and ran malwarebyte to see whether I had something nasty interfering with the antivirus, but I was in the clear.
I was going to reinstall AVG when I decided to try the popular Avast.
But I do like AVG though, it's quite good when it works.

I install virus & malware scanners, run the scans, then disable them in boot option/start-up options so they don't run continuously & interfere with browsing which is a natural consequence of their job as they scan/monitor web activity.

Spark, did you use the AVG removal tool? If not, it's left bits on your system which may not play well with avast. Use the removal tool from here:-

use the 32 or 64 bit version, depending on your OS :)

GunJack, I did use the removal tool. Nothing of AVG remains on my system.

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but I also have a problem with my Avast AV

    I can't stop it giving me 'pop-ups'

Despite setting the pop-up time to 0 or 1 seconds, it defaults back to 20 seconds

I've also tried to set it to silent/gaming mode, but again, it defaults back to normal mode

Would I be best to uninstall and reinstall it or ....... ???

    :)

Have you Registered? (not sure if that makes a difference or not)
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

Yes, I just had a quick play and clicked on 'log in' - it accepted my e mail and password and I set it to silent/gaming
Then I closed it down (just clicked on the X top right)
Then opened it up again (just double clicked on the avast icon in the notification area) and it said that "your device has been disconnected from your Avast Account - please sign in again"

    Any thoughts??

So... You leave your computer unprotected when browsing the web, leaving you potentially vulnerable to drive-by malware installations...?

That's not so bad if you're technically competent and have your browsers locked-down pretty well, but I wouldn't recommend it for most users.

Sorry; no. In the free version, I had a quick go at changing the default pop-up time (the top one) to 1 second, and it seemed to accept it, although I didn't restart the AV to check.

The tick-box at the top (allowing marketing pop-ups) was greyed out for me, though -- you need to buy the premium version to disable them. Maybe there's some other kind of restriction on the pop-up times...?

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Avast with just the 'three shields' and nowt else.

Fingers crossed, it all seems to be behaving as required now ....
