Yes, I back up Doozergirl. If you go to PlanningPortal.gov they show ths with diagrams, I'm pretty sure. She is right about this staggered building line rule.0

The line is staggered in planning technical guisance and appeal history. The builder is wrong.
Thank you for this. I hadn't appreciated that the building line was staggered, which means I am now in agreement that the proposed extension would normally require planning permission.
However this link from the planning portal website explains the legislation that could mean I am allowed up to 6 meters beyond the building line, as long as the extension is completed by 30 May 2016. I will mention that to the architect and see what he says.
Edited to add: just found that page 16 of the Technical Guidance for Permitted Development confirms that the building line is staggered. Page 15 gives the guidance for the 6m allowance until May 2016 and states that it's subject to the Neighbour Consultation Scheme, which is free and takes up to 42 days. Neighbours are contacted and are free to object of course.0 -
