Any protection for online theft

I bought something online for £8 using my debit card. Sadly it looks like it was a rouge site and they took £178 plus the £8 and then have sent no receipt or confirmation of any type. It has been 3 weeks. I've speedboat to my bank (hsbc) and they said they will open up an investigation but there is nothing they can do in terms of refund . Is this true or have banks in people experiences refunded the money?

They can do a chargeback.
HSBC are terrible about this sort of thing in my experience though so you will have to push them. Write to them clearly stating that the transaction was not authorised and ask them to do a chargeback.
I stopped banking with HSBC after their poor handling of unauthorised transactions on my account.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -

Is this some kind of internet slang that has passed me by or an outrageous auto-correct?
If I were you I would report it to the police as what you are saying is someone has stolen £178 of your money. They should give you a crime number. Then you will be in a better position to claim from the bank.0 -
Oh dear, yes. I don't know how spoke became speedboat. Thanks for advice. Wouldn't have thought the police would want to get involved but I guess it can't hurt. I will keep badgering hsbc. I guess I was just trying to get a feel as to whether I would get the money back. I guess theft is theft.0

Should I report to action fraud or direct to police?0

Looks like you can get a crime number online from action fraud so that will save waiting hours in the police station amongst the druggies.0
