Cost of removing a tree?

I have a tree in my garden that's fairly mature, not quite a mighty oak but well established. It's on the boundary line with the neighbour and I've had a note to say they would like me to remove it. I've been thinking about having it at least cut back, if not removed but am not sure how much I am looking at and whether or not there are other considerations.

I've got as far as e-mailing the planning team and it's not under tree protection order or anything so don't have these concerns.

It's a few feet taller than the house at the moment, so needs cutting back anyway.

Also, this may sound stupid but do I need a specialist tree surgeon or is someone who does general gardening/landscaping that says they do trees enough?

Pop over to the Arbtalk home owners forum and ask for advice on there.

    Tree surgeon.

As the neighbours want it done see if they would like to pay for it or at least split the cost.
If they are involved it makes it harder for them to come after you if any damage is caused.

Thanks all, I'll check out the forum.

The homeowner contacted me on behalf of the tenants, so he may be willing to accept some cost or at least talk to the tenants to give them a heads up of work happening.

He said he knows someone, but it seems a bit questionable to just let them do it so going to find someone I am happy with.

Happy to pay if I have to as it's my tree but have heard it can be quite expensive to remove whole tree and I do quite like the birds that visit the garden (though their leavings are part of the neighbours complaint!)

Thanks for the advice all. The MSE forums feel like a big neighbourhood where we still speak with our neighbours :)

I once sat and watched a proper tree surgeon gang cut down and remove an 80ft+ tree in the kind of location that you couldn't just chop the base, shout "TIMBER" and retire to a safe distance.

It really is a skilled job which should only be carried out by those who know what they're doing.

This can only ever become apparent if/when it all goes T*t'$ up !

I thought that might be the case, would rather pay a bit more on getting tree properly sorted than have to build a new house! ;)

£1000, don't ring up from a card through the door.
Not me, someone I know and it was a quarter of that size and get a written quote first.
