Income Support & College?

Hi all.
My brother is due to start college in september, but he has just had to claim income support because he suffers with bad anxiety (it runs through the family).
He had a job but had to leave, was on JSA then put onto IS. He has to go and fill in the forms on 20th August to join the college, and he is worried he wont be able to attend because he is on IS. I know you cant do it on IB (Incapacity Benifit), is it the same for IS?
He is determined to get a good job, he thinks he is useless and was bullied from school, doctor thinks it would be a good start.
Anyone know anything about it?
His courseis 15 Hours a week and will allow him into UNI upon completion.

Is he going to do an Access course? I don't know why you think it can't be done on IB, IB allows you also to work for up to 16 hrs/wk (as long as it's below a certain income), thus the same goes for college (if it's less than 16 hrs which, as you say, it is).
I don't think he needs to worry because he may have to pay much less in course fees if he can prove that he receives IS, again, if it's an Access course, most colleges give concessionary fees.
Is your brother worried that he might not continue to receive IS once he's in college? There is a very good and helpful website called SKILL (National Bureau for Students with Disabilities) giving detailed advice about student life and benefits. I wouldn't discard this just yet as not applicable because the tips are equally applicable for sufferers of depression, GAD and other mental health issues.0 -
Provided he studies for less than 24 hours per week he will be fine. The Access Course is fully compatible with Income Support. Different kettle of fish at Uni though!0
