Transferring ex-Natwest pension plan on Aviva

I have an old personal pension plan that I'm still paying into. It used to be held with Natwest Life but was transferred to Aviva a few years ago. The problem is that it is somewhat stuck with a limited number of fund options and no online access whatsoever.

Has anyone else tried to move such a plan within Aviva onto their Pension Portfolio or other plans? I'd like to get some flexibility in my future choices. I can't even tell what they've bought with my money each month without ringing them up! A statement once a year is useless really.

The two funds that it is currently invested in - Aviva Flexible Investment S12 Pn 3 and Aviva Growth Managed Pn 3 S12 - don't exist on the Pension Portfolio, but there are plenty of funds with somewhat similar allocations.

Do you think Aviva would charge for moving within their own universe?

    yes

Not for the vast majority of people. You can overdo these things.

What do they say when you ask them?

I have online access with my Aviva pension, where I can see my funds, performance, other fund choices, projections, etc. You should be able to register with your policy number. Are you sure you can't get access?

I did recently speak to Aviva about the fact I couldn't get online access to the existing plan. Unfortunately I didn't realise at the time I needed more questions answered, so all I got from that conversation was that options were limited on that plan - esp. the fact only a handful of Pn 3 S12 funds were available and I'd have to ring them up to change any allocations.

I'll reach out to them again about a transfer, I'd just wondered if anyone else had already been through such an experience.

I get that many people won't need to look at their portfolio more than once a year, so a yearly statement is fine. I'm now 50 and really want more feedback so I can figure out how to retire as early as possible (55 if I have my way). Knowing where I am once a year isn't going to be enough at this stage.

This is just one of 4 pension plans - 2 old work ones, 1 current work, and this Aviva one - only the current work and Aviva are being actively contributed to.

Bank branded products were often cut down and more expensive version of the IFA product. So, having fewer funds and reduced access is not a surprise.

My advice, keep it simple - just ask them.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....
