Had a Nationwide card for over three years now and used it in Europe and the states many times.

Just returned from the US having spent a large amount and was informed that the rate I got on 11th August was $2.02 to £1.

I'm delighted, because even for cash the best rate I got was $1.99 and that was a local promotion.

The good thing about the Nationwide is it also offers cash back, but only on UK purchases (but its by no way the best cashback card).

Definately recommend this card to anyone.

Just apply for a Nationwide debit or credit card. They are the only ones who don't charge for card usage abroad, plus you can withdraw fee free from local cash machines too. I do it and it works!
They aren't the only card that offers this....the Marriott Rewards Visa card (operated by Halifax) seems to offer this too (in addition to collecting Marriott Reward points).

I can't find anything in their T&Cs, but looking at our statements they haven't charged us any commission for our purchases abroad - which was a nice surprise :D

It's quite common for card statements to just show the converted amount and not to show a separate charge.

Condition 5 of the Marriott Cards general conditions states they make the usual 2.75% charge for converting foreign currency and adds 'the sterling amount we show on your statement will include this charge'.
