Frankly, I don't believe any of the "once in a blue moon" posters on here, particularly from the vociferous ones - you know who you are!
If they're frequently posing on a investment forum and only look at their own investments twice a year - I shall start to ignore their "advice"! :p

At least daily for me, even though I have been investing for ten years now.
I am one of the Dogs of the Index.
  • I do a portfolio spreadsheet update on the last day of each month and keep tab of the month-by-month changes.

I am also supposed to do a more in-depth review of performance against index/quartile rank about once every 3 months, but sometimes I forget...

Me too, but it isn't anything to do with fear (I'm not saying yours is), it's about more fun and a genuine interest in the markets.

Thanks for all the replies and I am glad it is not just me who keeps a close eye on how their funds are doing. I agree that seeing it go up and down from day to day means that after a while you learn to ignore the noise and don't fall into the trap of seeing prices decline on a "snapshot" day and sell in a panic. I find checking the prices and exploring the reasons for price volatility helps me learn and understand how investments work and also how media speculation on what they think will happen can affect the stock market. Also it is so easy to check so why wouldn't you keep a close eye on your investments?

I agree, although the counter argument is if you aren't going to do anything about them then why bother?

Sometimes 'doing nothing' can be a positive action if you reach that decision by having re-evaluated why you are holding an asset. For example, I have been carefully monitoring my ASOS holding these last couple of days and have convinced myself to hold rather than sell following their dramatic rise recently.
Old dog but always delighted to learn new tricks!
  • I leave those kind of decisions to moving averages - ASOS seems to work quite well with the SMA100

I dumbly reduced my exposure to US BioTech after reading a few headlines and getting spooked ... but they've gone on to rise another 7% since then

Glimpse at my spreadsheet (get your magnifying glass out, Tracker) - probably needs a redesign at some point .. just evolved as I've needed to add bits

Movements from one day to the next are essentially random. It's like watching the static on an old style TV.

cheers.. I much prefer to get my 100% truths from internet forum posts.:)
No need to take my word for it. Just follow the daily market round-ups offered by several different news services and see how implausible and contradictory the reasons given for market and sector movements often are.
