PHI help and advice please

Firstly Id like to say hello Im new to this board so its good to 'meet' you all.
Now for the long post (sorry)
Ive been ill since 1999 and found out that my company had me in a health insurance scheme. I didnt know anything about it so have no information about the cover at all. Anyway over that time my company was taken over so the current scheme is a different policy. Last november I was asked to go into work to have a meeting about a rehabilitation to work scheme. I went along and found that my job doesnt really exist any more but I said Id be willing to try other jobs. After not hearing anything from the PHI company I finally found out through work that they had said I wasnt fit to return. Again I heard nothing until yesterday when work phoned me at 4.30 to say that the PHI payment had been stopped in May and as they hadnt realised they would pay me until 31 August but after that there would be no money. (Thankfully they dont want me to pay back what they paid and shouldnt have!) Anyway work have no idea why the payment has stopped, they hadnt been informed although they said the PHI had sent a report in july that hadnt arrived. They asked me to phone the PHI which I did and they are going to call me back on Monday to explain why my payment has stopped.
Now Im totally lost and thought Id ask advice before speaking to the company. Are there any questions I should ask?
How do I stand if Im employed but not paid? Can I leave or does that affect benefit claims?
Basically any help you can give me would be wonderful!!
