I'd agree with the horse and cart round Central Park, as people say ESB could be veryt busy though I'm sure everyone up there would make it special. Another possibility maybe a helicopter ride, something different, not sure if they fly day and night but could always ask the pilot to stop somewhere different or special midair!

Have been meaning to go to this restaurant several times. It's been recommended to me by several people as a lovely restaurant for couples. I think it's down by Grenwich Village (or nearby).

How about a stunning view of the New York skyline in a very nice Restaurant that will be not empty but not crowded??

This Hyatt has a restaurant called VU and its food is very good, but the View is

stunning. Click on the graphic 3 in the slide show to get a small taste

and my photos look at the night skyline one.

It's also possible to get this hotel on Priceline for $55 per room per night.
  • Been to NY twice as my aunt lives on Long Island, so have had an opportunity to look round it a bit. One of the best nights we had was in a restaurant in the Italian Quarter. Can't remember the name of it at the moment but if you really want to know I can dig out our photo album and see if it is recorded in there.

It wasn't flash, it was a real Italian cafe/restaurant with photos of the owner and loads of celebrities all over the wall, including of course Sly Stallone. The owner and various regulars stood up at various points during the evening and sang great songs - Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, the Italian rat pack and that sort of thing. It was great. They deposited a huge bottle of wine on our table and we thought we had better drink it as we were paying for it. It turned out that they charged you by how much you had drunk and they marked the bottle and measured it by the inch! We nearly finished it and they were well impressed!

They had a menu but we didn't use it - they just sort of came up and asked what we liked and made some suggestions. We ate very well.

This may not be what you had in mind - it all depends on what you and your girlfriend like. However, I would bet that you would get the red carpet treatment true Italian Style in such a place, especially if you pre-warned them that you were about to pop the question. But even if you don't propose there, I can thoroughly recommend it as an experience.

Let me know if you want more info.

    Good luck anyway.

The Empire State Building is overrated and full of tourists (naturally, I suppose). If you want a great view, during the day or the evening, head up to the Rainbow Room for a drink (the food is very average so I wouldn't bother eating there). If you are going to pop the question there, I'd suggest, as with any other venue, calling in advance and telling them what you are planning...the Americans are very good at making an occasion special.

The River Cafe is also fantastic, but you are unlikely to get a window seat with only three weeks notice.

Also, on another night, head down to Balthazar (https://www.balthazarny.com) and don't miss Lombardi's on Spring St. (in Soho) for an amazing pizza and Rue 57 at 60 West 57th Street for an amazing breakfast (try the bearnaise benedict).

Or how about getting the Statten Island ferry at sunset and popping the question on deck?

    Hope that helps,

    Car.
