Energy company taking their time to refunding overpayments

If you're late with a payment by one day they'll trash your credit rating, but they can hold onto your money as long as they like and there's not a lot you can do about it, given that they are unregulated.
Thank you for your comments. I do intend to take this as far as I possibly can. I will be satisfied if they settle my financial loss and at 8% I shan't grumble. Remains to be seen if this is just a pipe dream! I am sure there are all manner of terms and conditions, that I never read I hasten to add, which gave them the carteblanche.....Illegitimi non carborundum

I found the opposite problem.
I did a tariff change around the time that my review was due and, even though the call centre person agreed that the overpayment of under £200 was best left ( because it would be eaten up over winter), it was still refunded.
When I complained (executive complaints via email) that this and a system error which caused a month's payment to be missed , would mean a deficit of almost this amount, I was awarded the relevant month's payment as compensation. The direct debit error was put right, immediately, too.0 -

If you have applied for another company to take over the supply, I doubt they will refund you anything now until they have produced a final bill, sorry.
You can demand what you like, but unless it was part of your contractual agreement, prepared to be left disappointed.
Who have you applied to switch to? Ovo? I think they agree to pay interest on credit balances (terms apply), but at 3%, not 8%
Not with ovo...the supplier is npower. switching to sainsburys energy. As far as I am cocerned, they should have refunded immediately, many months ago, when they dropped my monthly direct debit from 236 quid to 55! I am entiltled for compensation of loss of interest from that day on. Now that the switching process is in full swing, I dont see why they should hold on to the overpayment. By all means, hold on to the subsequent direct debits they have been collecting till switch is over. The 800 quid overpayment was determined yonks ago. They can take as long as they like, but whenever they repay, I shall expect compensation, and as they have refused, the claim starts on the day overpayment was detected. I am prepared to take this as far as I possibly can.....Illegitimi non carborundum
