hello everyone
my younger brother just turned 18 a few days ago...he wont be going Univerisity and has been looking for work for the past few months.
He hasnt found any so far....So his 18 now and is looking for work but hasnt found a job yet...can he apply for JSA ??
he lives with us and my father works earns around 20K before tax, i earn around 10K a year.
Do they only look at his position and his savings or will they look at the earning of other household members ?
because if they look at our earning and savings they may reject him for JSA.
so his not too sure...

Father works but doesnt get a lot, mother doesnt work but i do. but i get around 10K
so would he be eligible ? ....do they look at family members income or do they just look at his situation ?

He should make a claim for JSA.
Simple answer is yes, he should get JSA, but it all depends on how he demonstrates that he is actively seeking work when he makes his claim.
His income alone is used in the calculation. The income of his parents is not used at all.0 -
thanks....yes he is looking very hard, i always see him on the internet searching....sending off his CV but his had no luck.
so atleast this way JSA will help him pay for all them envelopes and stamps that he needs to send off his CV. (its not cheap)
can he apply online or does he need to go into the local job centre ?0 -
If he goes to his local Jobcentre plus, he will be directed to the public phones where he will be put through to the 'contact centre' to make his claim.
There is a little more advice about making a claim on the Jobcentre Plus website.
www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk
(general website link)
http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk/JCP/Customers/WorkingAgeBenefits/Jobseekerallowance/index.html
(Claiming on-line........scroll down and follow the link)
With regard to stamps, CV's etc etc, although the Jobcentre directly won't be able to help (until 6 moths into the claim normally), you may find they can tell him about local services that are free, depending on where he lives. Some organisations get funding to support jobless people in finding work. These won't be contracted from the Jobcentre, but may be a great starting point for Jobsearch support.0
