Looking for a family car up to 6 years old. Need to carry 4 grown ups and luggage. Have no preference for petrol or diesel. Annual mileage approx 12k.

Have a bad back and knee problems. Am okay getting into a low seat car but wil have difficulty getting out.

Currently drive a VX Zafira Tourer which is a great car and excellent seat height for me.

Was wondering what is out there for me that is not a MPV or SUV. By family car I mean a hatch/saloon or estate. Prefer engine size to be below 2.0litres. Main selling point will be reliability then economy.
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

I do sympathise, although I tend to have the opposite problem and find it tricky getting into low seats rather than out. I'm not sure of any car that meets your requirements, unless you are prepared to go for something that is van derived such as a Berlingo. What's your objection to a SUV, which I would have though would suit your purposes? Something like a Yeti perhaps.

    And your budget is?
12K pa, but what sort of journeys?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Decent sized crossover might do you well?

For a cheap one, the Vauxhall Mokka might be a good shout. The 1.7CDTi engine is pretty good, and the economy figures are something like 55-65mpg. Tech line comes with sat nav and all the usual bells and whistles. Also a bigger boot than most crossovers (but to be frank, its not the best in terms of driving...)

    Also you could look at:
    Maza CX-5 (although a bit SUV-ish)
    Toyota Rav4 ?
    Kia Sportage

Berlingo - gopod cars but have plans for my daughter to drive it as well so street cred is improtant lol.

Have nothing againt SUV but they tend to hold their values well. There are a lot of ex company cars like mondeo/passat which depreciate faster than SUV and MPVs. Am just looking for a bargin.

Yeti is a good car. love the looks of the old one but kids hate it :-(

Journey is approx 35 mins to work. Half is spent doing 30-40 mph and the other half is spent doing 69.99 mph down a dual carriageway. Car is fully warmed up and all cobwebs blown away from the engine. This will allow mw to chose a diesel with the dreaded DPF.

Budget is up to10k but am flexible. Prefer to spend aroung 6k.

Mokka is a bit small for my needs. I am a large man. Also need the boot space. Mazda is nice but too new. Trouble with SUV i think they hold their value better so no bargins available. I plan to keep my car for 6 years.
