Thanks so much for posting this, I have been trying to find the "courage" to go on my own somewhere. I am fed up of constantly having friends go with their OH's but never wanting to go away without them that I am going to take matters into their own hands.
I am thinking something around June, but more of a break where I can sit by a pool and soak up some sun the majority of the time but can balance that with some planned excursions.
Any ideas welcomed, to fly from Birmingham :-):A Eleventh Heaven Number 52:A1*2*:o*4*5*6*7*8*9*10*11ITV drama premiers £2K 11.01.11, Red Nintendo Wii0 -
Playa Blanca, Lanzarote would be good. I stayed at the H10 Lanzarote Princess and found the town to be a really friendly place. I left my OH a few times to walk into town at night on my own, and felt very, very safe.cherabelle wrote: »I am thinking something around June, but more of a break where I can sit by a pool and soak up some sun the majority of the time but can balance that with some planned excursions.

As for day trips, you could do a boat trip to Fuerteventura, sign up for a water skiing lesson, etc. I loved the coastal walks from the town to the Marina in the East and the lighthouse in West.0 -

As for doing things like going to events on your own, hopefully it's something I'll be able to do more of back home as well. I can't tell you how many plays, concerts and movies I've missed because nobody wanted to come with me and/or couldn't find the time.
100% know the feeling. I've given up asking people sometimes as they just sit on the fence. Like I went to the darts on my own and had asked my friend if she wanted to go, she said she might be going with her cousin, didn't say anything more then didn't go after all. If you wait for people to make there mind up/ sort money out we never end up anywhere sadly:T:T  :beer::beer: to the lil one

Yes, I have been going on holiday by myself for a long time but over the last few years I have started to go to concerts and sporting alone. Life is too short to miss out on events just because you can't find anyone to go with - and what with the cost of tickets to these events you can't expect people to go just to keep you company. At least with music or sport then you automatically have something in common with everyone else there so you always get talking to someone.0 -
I think it can be a different experience for men travelling alone than women, from people I've spoken to.
We all have similar worries and concerns but there can sometimes be more misconceptions from others when you are abroad about women travelling alone.
Get yourself familiar with who provides cheap flights ( Ryanair by a mile, then easyjet and jet2 generally speaking) to give you a benchmark, great if you are very flexible on dates.
Get used to using the mse flight checker.
Get familiar with using skyscanner a very useful tool for seeing who flys where from the uk.
Sign up to emails from the budget airlines .
Tips- check out that the time you are planning to go is suitable eg not the hurricane season or don't book the flight then find you can't get a decently priced hotel( already have a few benchmark prices)
My best tip is to understand that star ratings mean little ( I once stayed in a Uk hotel that had self classified itself and was a dump!)
Understand that the star ratings on trip adviser are not the same as the star ratings that rate a hotel. For example you could have a hotel that gives itself a four star rating on its classification but reviews have given three stars which is pretty dire. I would try and aim for 4.5 stars rating on tripadviser whatever hotel you have and never less than 4 stars ( I have stayed in two star classified hotels in Germany that get 4 stars on tripadviser , if you get my drift)0 -
Check out safety information on the foreign office website.
It will tell you of specific issues you should be aware of Italy for example.

Some great tips there don't get too worried been many times, forewarned is forearmed is your mantra.0 -
I would choose Barcelona, although you still have to look after yourself.0

I've booked flights to italy, was going with my mum but we have worries about my nan being on her own. I'm getting more convinced to go on my own for a break by the day. Might get some peace and quiet for a bit:T:T  :beer::beer: to the lil one

It was the best thing I ever did.
After a bad break up I took myself away for my birthday and haven't looked back.New York, Turkey, Egypt, Cornwall and so on.. I love not having to wait around for anyone and do exactly what I want when I want with no compromise.
I prefer to stay in hotels, but I've always got chatting to people around the pool or at breakfast and i'm really not that much of a chatter or bar hound.
Bite the bullet and do it.0
