Laptop will not charge, Battery and charger both work.

Hello,
Hoping for a bit of help here, normally find a solution on this site so hoping I can again!
Basically I did something stupid and plugged in the incorrect (non laptop) charger to my laptop (Toshiba Satellite C855) and the battery stopped working, got a replacement battery which works fine but will not charge up anymore, tells me the charger is plugged in but just losses power until the battery is flat. I am able to charge the battery on another laptop which then works on mine, the problem is that my laptop will now not let me charge the battery and I have no idea why?
I have searched online but to no avail, I am no expert on computers so need some help with this. Is it possible that I blew a fuse in the laptop when I plugged the incorrect charger into it? I don't even know if it has a fuse! Is it possible? If not then does anybody else have any idea what it could be? As I said the laptop works with a charged battery but will not take a charge itself.
Any help much appreciated.
Cheers,
Chris D

Oh, not an easy fix by the sound of it. Thanks for the reply.0 -
I had a similar Toshiba issue and some tech forums pointed to a known fault with capacitors overheating (on the motherboard close to the processor) - can't recall what model mine was - a satellite pro something or other.0

That'd be my guess too. You know the battery's fine, you know the charger's fine, so all that's left is the laptop.
Probably not an easy fix -- I assume you'd need to replace the motherboard... in which case it's probably more economical to replace the whole laptop.
If you're feeling brave, you could check out eBay for an identical model of laptop and use the motherboard out of that. As an example, this one's bidding for £14.50 with just under two days to go. Maybe you could get a bargain (or even a non-working one sold for spare parts if the motherboard is okay).

Cheers for all the help, I'm thinking probably a new motherboard, will keep an eye on ebay, thanks for the suggestion esuhl, much appreciated.0

You could try replacing your CMOS battery in case it has run out of juice and that is somehow affecting the charging circuit, for a couple of quid it may be worth a shot.0

Oh dear sounds like a blown voltage regulator on the board or a protection diode, it will not be the cmos battery.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0

Oh dear lol.......... People really over thinking this.
It's most likely the power jack and the rear of the laptop, it's extremely common for these to break away from the motherboard inside due to people taking the name "laptop" too literally and bending the connector when using them on soft surfaces, placing them on the floor, etc etc.
This results in a fault where the laptop thinks it's charging because a power lead has been inserted, but actually it's not charging at all.
When I say "extremely common", I mean it's THE single most common fault on consumer grade laptops. So common that there are multiple businesses out there who turn a profit by selling nothing but laptop power jacks.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Wager ? £10 says it isn't. The cause will be the wrong polarity of charger inserted.

I,m with fightsback on this one , if the jack plug was "broken off" , it would loose electrical connection** , there isn,t a little man inside turning a charging light bulb on every time a plug hits him up the bum
**
hint , might be in this statement
"tells me the charger is plugged in "0
