How long do refunds take from Barclaycards?

I purchased a rather expensive suitcase from a shop called Luggage Superstore who have failed to deliver, failed to refund when asked and have generally mucked up my order. They have terrible reviews online, but I was a fool and didn't check.

I've decided to submit a request to have the money returned via Barclaycard so I can go to John Lewis instead, who I know will be reliable.

How long does a refund take to be actioned, if it is successful? I see no reason why it wouldn't be successful (well past delivery date, completely ignored by company, bad reputation) but I am going away in 2 weeks and had planned to use the new suitcase, so obviously I want to get it as soon as I can!

Assuming 'rather expensive' meaans over £100, you have the choice of making a section 75 claim or a chargeback (if less than £100 then section 75 wouldn't apply).

These claims then need to be investigated by the card provider (i.e. they won't just take your word for it and will contact the retailer if still trading) so best not to bank on getting everything resolved within less than two weeks.

However, unless you're right up against your credit limits then surely you can make the second purchase before the first one is refunded, if you're confident of winning your case (no pun intended)?

I don't think it works this way.
They investigate the evidence and process the chargeback without contacting the company. Then the company can contact them and challenge the processed chargeback with their evidence, and chargeback can be reversed.

    Thanks. Yes, well over £100.

The problem is I need to keep my credit card free in order to put down a deposit for the car hire for our holiday. So I bought the suitcase and paid off half of it, and was planning to pay off the other half with my paycheque at the end of the month so it's completely free.

I do have money in my savings which I could use. As you said if I'm confident I'll get it back it'll be OK but there is always that fear that I'll get stuck. But I guess even if I somehow ended up with two, I could just return it to JL who will refund for me no problems :)

I mean, what reasons do we think Barclaycard could use for denying this claim? The item never arrived. It's not like it'a faulty and I'm asking for a replacement or something, I just want a refund because something has never turned up when it should. I am thinking buy from JL, wait for the refund and if Barclays have any issues with the refund then I'll have to fight it. But if the company suddenly decides to send the item (I assume they'd rather send a product than have money removed from them) then I can attempt to return it.
