They have a good old clockwork mechanism that - for the want of a better expression - is 'wound up' by an electrical motor.
When there is a power cut the clockwork mechanism still drives the clock to keep it at the correct time. I don't know how long it takes for the clockwork mechanism to wind down fully - but if it does then the clock stops.
IIRC the longest power cut we have had in 26 years has been about 12 hours - and it didn't affect my clock.
P.S. With everything operated by cheap Chinese electric motors powered by AA/AAA batteries, it did occur to me that very young contributors might not know the term 'Clockwork'0 -
