Fair enough Goldiegirl
For what it's worth I've taken almost identical steps and that was at least in part down to MMM. Certainly going down to just the 1 car (I loved my car too, sad as that was, but I'm happier now without it) and ditching Sky (though I've just signed up again as they offered me a ridiculously good deal... and Game of Thrones is on soon!)
I agree that he (along with other FI bloggers) can be a bit extreme at times but the general principles are very sound - cut your costs where possible and invest wisely. Sounds like you've done both of those things and are reaping the rewards now0 -

You have probably spotted a gap in the financial blogging market!
There are plenty that are numerical, lots that are ranty and many that are so loaded with ads you can assume the primary reason is to make the owner money. I am sure there must be room for one that is more emotional.0 -
ISFP here and I am very into the whole financially independence thing! I'm not big on the numbers, other than what I need to know to get me through
Saying that, I do quite enjoy going through YNAB and seeing where we're making savings, or logging in to check how the investments are doing which I do almost compulsively.0 -

Correct, however I suspect it's not quite the same sort of numbers for the other way round. Not trying to turn this into a "they're stealing all our jobs" type point, but more that UK jobs pay pretty well compared to most of the EU, thus limiting our options to move for better work. Plus the language issues.Radiantsoul wrote: »And plenty of people from the UK retire to places like Spain.
Not sure why you've mentioned this as it has nothing to do with the points I raised0 -

Now there's a thought!Early retired - 18th December 2014

Tangentially in that many of these guys probably start off in high wage/high cost of living areas and then downgrade to low wage/low cost of living places. Mr MMM is always banging on about how cheap his area is.
From the UK perspective you have the option to move to Spain or Estonia or Greece. In many of these countries language would scarcely be an issue.0 -

Yes, I appreciate that you could retire to these cheaper places.. but it doesnt help you in getting to the point where you can retire. The US has both well paid jobs AND the cheaper areas to then retire to after.. it seems in the UK we only have half of those options.0 -

Perish the thought - - you could even learn the local lingo as you have time on your hands. Although they might not like Brits very much if the referendum pulls the drawbridge.0 -

That's what I think too.
To be fair to Mr MM I have listened to a podcast interview and he came across as very nice and normal so maybe it is just some of his more ardent fans on the forum that put people off.:DHOUSE MOVE FUND £16,000/ £19,000
