HB and JSA questions, help please.

Hi,
We may have the chance of a council house exchange in a totally different area (about 500 miles away) obviously my husband would have to give up his job if we decided to move. My questions are : Would he be entitled to claim JSA if we move, he has worked and paid NI for at least 5 years, until one of us or both find jobs? We have 2 small children and would need to find childcare etc. The new house being so far away means that it would be impossible to attend interviews etc before we moved.
Also, would we be entitled to claim Housing Benefit until we are working etc? We get CTC and a very small amount of WTC (due to overpayment  ) already. We have never claimed either HB or JSA so sorry if these are silly questions! I would appreciate help from someone who knows.
Many Thanks. :D
Proud to be dealing with my debts :T

  • I don't think he would be able to claim JSA as he would have given up his job voluntarily. ( However, maybe moving away is classed as a god reason for leaving your job - if it is I'm sure someone will be along soon to confirm, or otherwise).

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

He can't give up a job without good reason and be paid JSA. He'll probably be sanctioned for a while. Then again they might say he had good reasons. This depends on why you are moving. It would be up to the Decision Maker at the Jobcentre.

His WTC would stop as he wouldn't be working. Your CTC might get reduced if they are still recovering an overpayment

However there's no reason why you can't claim JSA yourself for the two of you. You'd be in the same position as if you were on Income Support, that is full Housing/Council Tax Benefit
I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!
