Cheap international calls

I have tried some of the numbers in the call checker to make cheap calls to Ireland however after being connected to the service, halfway through dialling the number I get interrupted by the service to tell me they cannot connect to the number in Ireland. I know the number is correct since I can get through when dialled normally. I am using Tiscali - can anyone advise why i might be having this difficulty and if there is a cheap call provider I can use?

You say you are using Tiscali - does that mean you've transferred your line rental to them?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. I was afraid that would be the case.

I suspect that Tiscali have barred access to the gateway number(s) you're trying to use (Talk Talk, Madasafish and Virgin Media have also done similar).

Only BT is required by its licence to allow access to all such numbers, CPS providers and prefix code providers (1899 etc.). Tiscali and the other WLR/LLU providers do not have to do so and bar them so as to force subscribers to route their calls, often more expensively, over their own networks.
