Lining paper vs plastering

Hi,

Due to regs we've had to build some partition walls in timber with plywood either side, rather than in brick with a plaster finish.

As the walls will not have a finish our builder has given us a large quote for plastering and has suggested we do lining paper.

Our concern is that lining paper will look just like wall paper and look different to plastered outer walls and peel. We'd need to get a professional to do it if we did, as the walls go quite high and there is a small landing area where the paper will need to be fitted around doors.

Can anyone give a verdict on lining paper? Is it worth it or should we just suck it up and pay for plastering?

suck it up and plaster (but get more quotes for that element).

lining paper screams that the house is hiding something.
  • Hi NJG,

I was very reluctant to go for lining paper for the same reasons, but decided to try it on one wall first, before going ahead with the whole house. Pleased to say that the lining paper isn't visible at all and I also have high walls and quite a few curved areas. Good quality (medium thick) lining paper and good workmanship are key. The work was done a year ago and hasn't peeled at all in that time.

Other advantage is that there is no cracking of plaster behind radiators which I found in another old house where I had all the walls plastered.

Screw plasterboard to the timber sheet and plaster it, not difficult nor massively expensive for a builder.

Does he not want the job?

If good quality lining paper is applied professionally it should not be obvious it is lining paper.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

That sounds stupidly expensive to me. Have you tried to get other quotes for the plastering?

Personally I hate lining paper - plaster all the way.

I hate the effect on sound in a room with painted plaster.

Seems dear to me, although you haven't stated your units of length.

Plasterboard is cheap, installing it is easy and a plasterer can put a skim on it direct without needing carlite (or other bonding) first.

I put up new plasterboard onto one side of a 11'x8' stud wall, plasterer charged me £55 to skim it.
