So before taking a test drive you make them pay for the car first in full?

If that comment was addressed to me, then no.

Think of it as a 100% deposit, refundable in full if the car/bike is returned in good condition after a reasonable test. But if you have my car/bike away from my premises and out of sight, then I have the value of it in my hand in case you decide to default. If you object to that, then you can have a test drive with me at the wheel.
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.
