Poor Balance

After losing 3 stones from Feb to Sept last year I joined our council gym and have lost a further stone since.

I'm fine with the gym equipment and swimming. But I've joined some classes and find I'm having trouble with some of the "moves" because I wobble over when dancing and certainly cannot do anything which requires lifting a foot up off the ground. I even have trouble in the pool trying to do the aquarobics moves.

Does anyone have an idea why this happens and what I can do to improve ? I practice at home but it doesn't help in my classes.

Help !

Do you have any ear problems, like the ears feeling blocked, fluctuating hearing and tinnitus ?

I have an inner ear illness, which in some people causes balance issues.

If any of that sounds familiar, then you should go to the doctors to get looked at.

I had a problem with proprioception and needed physiotherapy.........thankfully I've been fine ever since. You should see your GP who will diagnose why you're having problems.;)

  • I think balance can be affected by several different things, ears, joint stability, core strength etc.

How was your balance before you lost weight?

Back then I wasn't very active so I don't remember being unsteady. Its only since I've started my exercise classes that I realise how wobbly I am.

Silly me hadn't thought about seeing my GP but I need to rule out anything that needs treating medically first.

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to reply.

    How's your eyesight?
My eyes have completely different prescriptions which makes my depth perception a bit off, and means my balance and co-ordination is terrible.
Might be worth having an eye test if you haven't had one in a while.

Sounds like you were out of practice. A medical check of your ears would be a sensible course of action, but so would practicing balancing at home - hang on to a chair back and stand on one leg for a few minutes, then change over to the other one, then do that without the chair, then dance around etc etc
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Your eyes can be a useful aid to balance. A lot of people, myself included, can stand on one leg fine with eyes open, but fall over if we shut them. You may find it helps to use this to its fullest - don't just look at a blank wall when balancing, but fix your vision on something that isn't moving - a clock or the lightswitch perhaps. Does this help at all?

  • I'm dyspraxic so I too struggle with my balance, which is why I opt for running as my main excercise lol. However i decided i really wanted to tackle this as it made riding a bike almost impossible and my local council offered free cycling training classes for all ages. I explained to my guy that i had balance issues and he gave me some really useful training tips and now im back on the road as a cyclist after a few short sessions :) It might be worth seeing if your council has something similar to help you get your balance back on track

Apols for time lapse. I've tried this and it has helped when I'm standing still in my kitchen. No so when I'm in my fitness class and prancing around to the thump-thump music ! I'm going to persevere with it . Thank you
