Hi just a quick question I'm going to new York at the end of the month will it be better to take cash or apply for the Halifax clarity card and use that, opinions would be great. Thanks

    Neither.

If you can I would apply for a Clarity card by default, never travel without mine and the fact you can notify them online which countries you will be in and where to reducing the risk of the card being blocked is excellent imo (Barclaycard should take note...you suck at this).

We went to New York in Feb this year. We took £600 cash and spent £400 on a credit card.

I'd always take some cash, for street vendors, small purchases, taxi's etc as even though taxi's take cards it's more hassle.

Most places take cards - we didn't encounter anywhere that didn't but one or two wanted to see extra ID.

    Clarity Card every time.

An airport ATM may charge you around $3 for a cash withdrawal (taxi and tip money) but the exchange rate will be far better than changing cash before travel.

If you need further cash when you're there TD Bank were free for ATM withdrawals 18 months ago. Not heard of that changing. But you'll be able to do 90% of your spending by card.

We went in November and used the Clarity card. As others have said, everywhere accepted it, no hassle, and no fees!

I was there last May and used the Clarity for everything, cash withdrawls to paying hotels and bar tabs, easy peasy you can't go wrong.

I'm going in June but don't really want to have another credit card (I have too many!), I was planning to use my NW which is also free for payments , but not on ATMs. I guess I'll take some cash and just use an ATM if I ran out..

It's annoying you can only do 1 country at a time though. I'm going to something like a dozen countries this summer, some multiple times, so will have to submit about 15 different web forms for it!
