Changing car tax class from Disabled

Hi all

As some of you might know from my other thread, I've been looking for a car to fit my powerchair in. Well the good news is, I've found a used WAV which suits me just fine :)

But I've hit a bit of a snag. So once again I find myself on here asking for help.

I went to tax my new car online tonight but it says the taxation class is 'Disabled'. That doesn't apply for me because I don't meet the criteria, but if I try to continue with the online application it wants evidence that I meet the criteria. :(

(Why it just doesn't have an option to change the class I don't know).

But basically now I'm stuck because I don't know how to tax it properly, and I'm picking it up on Saturday!

So does anyone know how I go about changing the tax class to 'normal' (or whatever its called?) and will I have time to do this before Saturday?

  • Right I've solved this one I think, but thought I'd let you all know in case anyone else has the same problem.

I telephoned the DVLA this morning and told them the situation. They said I need to fill in a form V62 and put the new taxation class as 'PETROL CAR', take this with the new keeper supplement and MOT certificate to a post office and they will be able to tax it.

It cannot be done online if there is a change of tax class (although on the face of it I don't see why not, but that's another rant :))

Anyway, I have informed the dealer I am buying the car from, and he has helpfully offered to do this for me and tax it before I pick the car up.

Just do it a the post office.

This is the right answer. I bought a vehicle a couple of weeks ago with Disabled VED classification, took paperwork to PO, filled in form, they did it all for me and sent the V5 to DVLA. Job done.
