Overcharged on CC for fuel?
Didn't know where to put this so decided on here. Filled up today and receipt says £43.81. Looked on my CC website this evening and there is a pending transaction for £44.81. Can't think of anything else that I have bought on CC for several days so it is a bit odd that it is exactly £1 more than the receipt. It is a local garage that I have used for several years so am finding it a bit strange. Any thoughts?

The £1 will be a pre authorised amount and will be refunded/not taken/claimed by the petrol station0

It might have pre-authorised £1 prior to filling and will show as the correct amount once the charge completes?
I find with internet banking and card use these days that all sorts of strange figures show as pending.0 -
Thanks for those replies. Never heard of that before. Very co-incidental that I filled up and looked at my CC bill the same day (for a different reason) Will have to check when the monthly statement comes in. The person that served me today has served me numerous times in the past but was extremely friendly and chatty today so I was a bit paranoid.0

It'd take them a long time to get rich ripping people off a quid at time.:rotfl:0

Just a bump. Correct amount is now showing on CC website although it has moved from pending to being shown on the current statement. At 55 and having had a CC for 30-40 years I have to say it is the first I have known about this. We live and learn.. Well... Thanks all.0

They will pre-authorise a nominal amount on the card, just to prove it is a genuine card, before allowing the pump to dispense (I assume this was a pay-at-the-pump transaction, rather than pay at the till?). These pre-auths can take a day or two to drop off the account after the main transaction has taken place. In effect, a pre-auth will ring-fence a certain amount of the available credit on the card, which protects the retailer against fraudulent charging. This will show temporarily on the CC statement as a reduction in available credit - of course, you haven't actually paid any real money to anyone, as it is resolved before you pay the CC bill. In fact, if you hadn't checked online and waited until you got the paper statement, you would not have been aware that it had happened.
So, no harm, no foul.If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
Can you just confirm this was a pay at pump transaction?
If not then it's very odd.0 -
My Nationwide debit card does this, even when paying at the till. Yet my Co Op debit card doesn't.
But if I pay at the pump, Nationwide card will allow £100 fuel, co Op will only allow £60.0
