Urgent-fridge/freezer Just Died. Help Please

It's definite - fridge light goes on but is very warm inside. It has served me well over 10 years, but the timing is rotten. Upper freezer section is holding at present.Have masses of food(visitor due) and budget does not allow for replacement.
Is there ANYTHING that sometimes happens to these that I might be able to investigate/put right first?
ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED. Have just posted on local Freecycles, checked ebay for nearby appliances at tiny cost.
Thankyou in advance for any suggestions.

Found this bit on the site, for which thanks again Canucklehead.#

    Fridge not cooling

This can be caused by a thermostat failure (refer to the above section) but that is rare to be honest. More likely the compressor is not running or not running properly for some reason.

    • Compressor failure
    • Compressor PTC
    • Compressor relay
    • Thermostat
    • Electronic failure
    • Thermistor failure

If the fridge cools a little on a fridge freezer and the freezer section seems okay then it can also be a sign that there is either a blockage or a shortage of gas. Please note that a gas shortage will not manifest itself magically after a few years unless there has been physical damage to the pipework.

Basically this is pretty much an experts area, but the causes are as follows in the main:

    • Shortage of gas on appliances under a year old
    • Blockage or choke in pipework
    • Changeover valve faulty
    • Compressor pumping weak (highly likely on older machines 8 years or more old)

    Freezer not cooling

See above as it’s pretty much the same as for a fridge.

I would think the bit I've highlighted above fits the bill - unfortunately.

Keep door close and talk to your neighbours, ask them for freezer space. Most will oblige, this will get rid of problem No.1 (how not to loose the food). Then go on and try to solution your p[roblem No.2 which is a repair or replacement of your unit.

I had, in fact, opened door to prevent further heat build-up, but will now close door and unplug everything. Have decanted what I can and will have to cook other things early.
Just off to look at one in local-ish auction.
    Thankyou for your advice.

A plea on freecycle can't hurt. I've seen people in your situation get fridge-freezers in the past.
EDIT Oops just re-read your post and saw you've done that-got my fingers crossed for you !

In fact, posts took too long to appear on Freecycle, auction one was no good, BUT found one, witihin 10 miles of me, on Gumtree.
It's an LG GR359SQ Multi AirFlow Frost Free, whatever that all means, a monster, only a year old and cost £50, which I don't have spare, but it had to be.
Now doing its settle-in-overnight thing I've been told about.
Not too much thrown out and back to sort of normal tomorrow, fingers crossed.

Contents insurance policies often include cover for loss of frozen food in the event of freezer failure. May be worth a look !

Was that salmon and caviar you had in the freezer
