Reclaimed £268 Santander Bank charges......sort of.

Chuffed!!!

I made a complaint with regards to the charge cycle I had gotten myself into in October 2014 due to illness from work and a dramatic reduction in income.

Got a phone call today from the financial assessment team. Unfortunately they couldn't go back as far as October but did write off the charges due (£95), promised to refund me for the charges which have built up since going overdrawn this month due to charges and refunded me £95 for this months charges.

Happy bunny.

How did you go about this, got myself into a right kerfuffle in the last three months and am currently being charges £140 month in charges which has put me over my overdraft so I've been charged again...in a position to (hopefully) put a stop to it this months but wouldn't mind some of it being returned

You should just ring up and explain the situation - if it's a first time they may well waive them. If you are in current financial hardship ask to speak to someone who deals with that sort of thing and explain the situation and they may agree to refund some charges, freeze further charges etc. Do note banks have varying criteria for hardship but if your statements show "reckless" spending and living beyond your means (as opposed to being in a cycle of charges, debt and are unable to get out) they may well reject a hardship plea. Typical factors suggesting you are not in hardship would be expensive mobile phone contracts, eating out, sky TV packages etc

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
