Driving licence renewal only for 7 years

My licence ran out in early March this year so I renewed but new photocard says it runs out in 02.11.2021. I thought a renewed licence lasted for 10 years. Is this a new innovation?

What age will you be in 2021?0

A driving license is only valid until you reach age 70. (e.g. my photocard expires in 2023, but my actual license expires in 2035). Thereafter it needs to regularly renewed after medical assessment - every 3 years I think.0

Not true medical assessment by a GP but self- assessment by completing and returning a form. .. At least that's all I 've had to do since attaining the age of 70.0 -

OK - I'm wrong about a specific medical being required. So shoot me.
Am I wrong about the license expiring at age 70? No.
Am I wrong that periodic assessments (howsoever invoked) are required post age 70? No.0 -

Some people just have to get the last word in, even if it adds nothing to the thread, eh ?0 -
Ah, I should have cottoned on. Yes, I will be 70 then. It seems a mite silly considering a 70 yo driver with 50 years driving experience is probably a lot safer than a 20 yo with 3 years'.“Learn from the mistakes of others. You can never live long enough to make them all yourself.”

But a 20-y-o will likely have much better eyesight and much faster reactions.
But you're right (in general) as regards safety ... it's not that a 20-y-o CAN'T be safe, just that they think they're invincible and so often AREN'T safe.0 -

You should see some of the 70 year old drivers around here!
I'm sure your driving is fine, but some will carry on even with some quote severe impairments it seems.0 -
The problem is that people often don't notice aspects that deteriorate gradually, such as your eyesight or your reaction times. One of my elderly relatives didn't realise they had problems until they ran over an old man at a zebra crossing, it was very distressing for the driver, the guilt is enormous. They surrendered their licence and never drove again.
I may be young but didn't realise my eyesight was getting worse until I couldn't read text on the TV, went to the optician and got some glasses and suddenly I could see how bad my eyesight was because suddenly everything had a huge amount of extra detail.
I think everyone should have to have an eye test and reaction test at least every 10 years, then every few years after 70Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0
