Renault Trafic 2011, dci115 gearbox dead.
Hi, any advice would be welcomed.
I drive a 2011, Renault Trafic 2.0DCi 115. I have owned the vehicle from new and the differential in the gearbox has failed.
I appreciate the vehicle is nearly a year out of the 3 year / 100,000 mile warranty but it has only done 43000 miles, hasn't been abused.
I am self employed and rely on this vehicle to make my living. It has been driven carefully from new, only on its first set of replacement tyres and had the brake discs and pads replaced last month, so hardly thrashed everywhere.
My dealer have said that it will cost me 7.5 hours labour @£105 per hour to carry out an inspection before they can quote any repairs, but because they have 2 warranty engine replacements in this week  they cannot look at it for 16 days.
My local gearbox specialist thinks they are taking the Michael, he jacked up the van and span the wheel and immediately knew the differential had gone, noisy and rough to turn.
I called Renault UK, complaints team. Spoke to a very helpful guy, who told me that Renault would look at a contribution towards replacement. But I would have to pay for the new clutch and flywheel plus labour at standard Renault cost, which will be more than what my local gearbox specialist can do the whole job including a reconditioned gearbox fly wheel and clutch.
I received a message on Friday 6th March at 1658, asking me to call back to discuss further, and the office was closed at 5pm.
I have tried contacting them and left messages with his colleagues and still had no reply as yet.
My van is currently not drive able, so have had to cancel this weeks work. HELP.

Your only option is to get the gearbox repaired.
These vans are known for gearbox, flywheel and clutch issues as are the larger Master vans.
I would expect the Vauxhall and Nissan versions of the same vans to be exactly the same.
If you drive in built up areas a lot, loaded up with lots of use of full lock then it might explain the early failure of the diff.
Don't forget hpw small the diff actually is in a FWD van, one reason why if was in the market for a van I would probably buy a RWD one, not much help in your situation.
Some fwd gearboxes you could change just the diff but not sure if that is possible on that box
As the miles are low I would probably only change the flywheel if it had wear, but would do the clutch.
There are specialist tools to assess DMF wear which you gearbox specialist should have access to, if he doesn't then consider going elsewhere.
I wouldn't personally bother with the Renault dealer as they will want to change everything for brand new parts and charge you accordingly.0 -
The very early models were bad but at that age I'm pretty surprised. I have ten trafics and they're used every day by the lads who work for me.
They have a pretty bad repuation due to people with no money buying the earlier models cheap, with high mileage then complaining when they go wrong
Stilla far better van than the Transit though0 -
I run Masters, just bought 3 new ones, first one sitting new and shiny in the warehouse. We don't generally have gearbox/flywheel etc problems, though in fairness most of ours is motorway mileage.
I'd stay with the local guy and get him to do the work.
I find you get better service from the commercial side, but they aren't set up to deal with Traffics. We were going to get 2 Masters and a Traffic and having to deal with the car side, was one of the negatives.0 -
get yourself Renault CLip software, it is possible to get the problem settled down0

Software to fix a knackered diff? OK then!0 -
Renault have offered 60% contribution to the £3600 bill for a recon box fitted with new clutch, BUT only if when it has been inspected it is found to be a defect with the gearbox.
Then they will send me a rebate for the £2160.00 after the strip and inspection, now call me cinical but....... I think they may try and worm out of that.
I'm going with my local guy, he will at least charge me what he says.
Still not to happy that I have this kind of problem on a 46 month old vehicle.
Thanks for all the replies 0 -
Hubby had a 59 plate Renault Trafic from 2009-2012 from his work.
It had 2 new gearboxes under warranty during that time and the third box was on its way out again when it was traded in, the fact yours has lasted 46 months would impress my hubby.0
