Ok, I've just bought a property. I don't know who the existing gas and electric suppliers are, but obviously I'm looking for the best deal. As a first time buyer I don't know what my expected usage will be, therefore most of the price comparison websites are pointless.

1. Does it matter who the existing supplier is, or can I just contact a new supplier, give them meter readings, and get connected?

2. I'm going to be living on my own in a two bedroom apartment in Sheffield S26 area. Can anyone suggest where I might find the best deal?

You will need to contact the current supplier and give them readings as it will take at least 28 days to switch to the supplier of your choice.

Energyhelpline would be a good place to compare providers. They have an option to estimate your consumption for you. An online tariff would probably be your best bet.
