Flights to Chennai (Madras) in December

Before I search the entire web, does anyone have any hints/tips on flying to India at the end of December/beginning January?
I'd like to know cheapest flights, of course (!), but also whether there is any "better" time to go - ie before/after Christmas/New Year etc?
We are staying with family in India so don't need accommodation. Travellers are a family of four, 2 adults, 2 kids (will be 13 and 10 so may have to count as adults?).
Any suggestions gratefully received!

Air routes between the UK and India have been artificially restricted by government agreements for decades. Currently, there are very few direct services between the two countries.
However, all that is about to change and travellers should expect to see a flurry of new airlines competing for your money over the coming months! Virgin Atlantic and bmi British Midland are the two major contenders from the UK but they're likely to focus on the Delhi route first until they can source some new aeroplanes to fly elsewhere.
My advice to you would be don't rush into a booking just yet - instead keep an eye on the aviation press and see who's going where. If you are desperate to book now, British Airways (http://ba.com) are currently the only airline operating direct services between London and Chennai

Wise Investors dead right! There's talk of fares to India dropping by up to 25% - 30% in the near future!0
