My son lives in Kent ( Tonbridge and Medway Postcode for rough location) in a mid-sixties 3 bed-semi, whose upstairs windows are built in to the roof chalet style. It still has its old dbl glzd aluminium frames, which need replacing.

He has sent me quotes from recommended local tradesmen, telling me that "got them to quote on the same spec @ 70mm, so are comparing like for like ". I have attached a document here containing the designs, measurements and costs from the traders I hope someone will give an opinion on those quotes with attention to, as he asked, to

* Quality of profiles used.
* Cost for work being done.
* Number of Days to complete work.

    My OP actually said, "recommended local tradesmen", so definitely not one of the big firms. I don't know your location, but I said he was in Kent, so I'd get views especially from those with knowledge of the south east commuter area.

    My suggestions are: Duraflex is by far the cheaper quote you have, so go with this profile. I have this profile in my home but others on this Forum do not rave about it. Here one must remove the smoke and mirrors - the profile is largely irrelevant provided that it is from a reputable ISO and Kitemarked manufacturer. That said Rehau produce a dreadful one, but I do not recall if it is 65 or 70mm.

    What makes the window is the quality of manufacture, the quality of all the ironmongery, the specification of the glazing, the back up and all the guarantees. All of this is usually, and conveniently, not detailed in the spiel from sales people and installers. Invariably they just draw the customers attention to the name of a plastic profile manufacturer. This is as relevant as saying the steel in the body of your new Vauxhall is made by Corus. So what, and who cares, would be typical responses to this.

    With regards price, I believe the quote is extortionate. You only have to look at a Wickes booklet, or similar, to get an idea of market rates for supply. Alternatively you only need to approach a local builders merchant, or wholesaler, to establish this.

    With regards fitting time this again is smoke and mirrors. It will not take twice the time to fit a different plastic profile. It also depends on how many fitters are in the gang. Besides who cares? In one years time will someone be beating themselves up because the windows took four days to fit instead of three.

    I hope this helps and trust my response will be shot down like that of jc808!

    Try getting a quote from http://www.woodsidewindows.co.uk/ . An independant guy called Steve near sevenoaks. Hes done mine and my neighbours houses, and his prices are good.
