Help! I've lost my essay

Evening people,

I'm hoping you can help and avert my ex-husbands murder!

I had a few pop ups and my laptop was running really slow and sluggish, he thought the best thing to do was a system recovery and without giving me the option to save anything he then wiped it clean. EVERYTHING including my essay!

Can i get it back and if so how? will it cost me loads?

Thanks in advance for your help and advice, i cant face doing it all again!

If the hard drive has been formatted and the operating system re-installed the chances are pretty much zero of getting it back unfortunately.

Aww all your work g -o-n-e you must be going mad. Only thing I can think of is when you put the internet on go to view history and see if you've got any earlier versions you can go back to. Other than that I'm sure you'll always remember to save your work to disk from now on sorry.

Unfortunately what some of the people on this thread have been telling you is absolute nonsense. I would suggest trying some disk recovery software and it should be fairly easy to recover, the reasoning behind this would take a while to explain. As for using your internet history to recover it, this is impossible. Leave such advice to the professionals. Thanks.:money:

Well as a last resort you could try running an undelete program, what have you to lose?
If you search the Techie Stuff forum there should be some programs listed, I have in the past used Undelete Plus which is freeware.

The bigger your hard disk, the more chance you have of getting it back. If the data area has been overwritten, then it's gone.

I would generally suggest that one runs recovery software from another drive. eg. A USB thumb drive.

Not all of the software above can recover files from a formatted hard drive. The most to install, the more likely you can corrupt the very files that you are trying to recover.

Of course, we're assuming that you are not running Vista;

After discussions with customers and further extensive testing, we have found that if you are running Windows Vista and initiate a full format of your drive (i.e. not a "Quick Format"), NO data recovery software will be able to recover your files.

It appears that due to the enhanced security features of Windows Vista, that when a full format is run, it writes 0's to every sector of the disk. As each sector has had something new written to it, the old data is completely erased.

In terms of security when donating your pc to charity, giving it away or selling it, this is a good feature.

However, if there is even the remotest possibility that you will need to recover data from your drive, then users are out of luck.

I would recommend that if you are going to format a drive using Windows Vista, that you select a "Quick Format". Your drive will still be formatted, but you will be able to use data recovery software, including Recover My Files and the other products in the GetData range of software, to recover your data.

Please note that if you have done a full format of your drive using other versions of Windows, e.g Windows XP, you can still recover your data.

Thanks everyone for all your help, idiot ex-husband (bless him) is trying hard to redeem himself and has used a recovery thingy, not sure if its worked but its recovered alot of files but im not sure what im doing so i'm waiting for him to come back round and have a nosey at it.

I appreciate everyones help and i'll let you all know if i managed to get it back, failed the course if i cant but lets think positive!!
