Moved in together in Jan14 and Child Benefit

We moved in together on 24th January 2014 from separate addresses. We stopped the child benefit as my income is above the threshold. My partner was claiming child benefit up until 20th Jan as she was on her own and entitled to it.
We filled in a self assessment due to my income being higher and I have received a tax bill to pay back all the child benefit for the year 2013/14.
I contacted the tax office (44 mins on hold!) and they stated that this is correct even though we had completely separate incomes and houses until that date.
I dont see how logically I have to pay for child benefit that my partner received before we moved in together. I would have thought that I would have paid on any overpayment from 24th Jan
Has anyone else experienced this and is it correct?
thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks BB
I phoned the child benefit helpline and they confirmed it only applies from the Monday after we moved in.
Looks like the tax office gave me the wrong info.I will waste another 44 mins of my life ringing them tomorrow.
Thanks again for the link0 -
