The HSBC app has only recently improved from being a total write off to just slightly above terrible. The Santander app and general online banking is an absolute dream - so user friendly.
HSBC have always been woeful when it comes to mobile banking apps. Their Fast Balance app was a total insult to customers. It would only allow you to see accounts which you had a card for and did not offer payments and transfers and you could only see the last six transactions. At the same time Barclays and some others had fully functioning apps which you could run your account from.Money is a wise mans religion0 -
They simply post the 'authorisation' as a debit transaction and then substitute it for the 'real' transaction when that arrives.
The OP could probably request an online Visa debit or Maestro / Electron from one of the UK banks.Ignoring their other limitations I am amazed at the speed that transactions are posted by Clydesdale/Yorkshire - debit card payments made on other sites/in shops appear almost instantaneously on the app and internet banking! Pending is rare - it just goes straight there - with fuller details the next day. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. The only card I have that displays pending transactions is my Santander credit card (I don't have a Santander current account so don't know if they do it). And I think it's only shown on the website-based online banking, not on the mobile app.
Most/all of my accounts have an "available balance" which includes pending transactions, even if you can't see the individual transactions.
However, as others have said not all transactions are done online unless you have an online-only card; offline transactions will only show up when they have been processed. A couple of weeks ago at Zizzi's restaurant their systems were down so we had to pay with one of these: http://creditcardsupplies.co/wp-content/themes/MyProduct/images/header_ccimprinter.png - first time I'd seen one for about 20 years. And that was for a transaction of about £150.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

They are supposed to call up manually for authorisation with one of those zip-zap machines.
My local deli had one when I was at Uni - all my mates had Switch (which couldn't use them) but I had Visa Delta and found out their floor limit was £30

Barclaycard are good too, on the app and on line you can see cleared and pending transactions. With a Barclays current account debit card transactions are almost invariably deducted from the balance immediately. Although the balance is adjusted straight away the name of the retailer will take a working day or so to appear.Money is a wise mans religion0
