we also received a letter addresses to our property. thing is their are 4 flats and it doesnt say which is to be changed or perhaps it is all of them i just dont know? i dont intend to ring an 0845 number to find out.
call 01452 307307 instead and ask to be put through to metering
So please tell me, how much does it cost to ring an 0845 number in comparison to the 01452 number that you have given as an alternative? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
0845 is up to 6p a min from a landline. 01452 is 5p per call through 1899. Also if you've got free evening calls or free mobile minutes the 01452 call will be free whereas you'd have to pay to call 0845.

Going back to the meter exchange programme, does anyone have any experience with asking for a different meter than offered? They want to replace ours with one that is taller, thicker and wider than our old one, which fits snugly in our home-made cupboard. The new one won't fit without major alterations.
They tell me it's their 'standard meter', but to be honest, it looks pretty old-fashioned. I also read on their website that they refurbish the old meters they take out (unless not working properly), so it might be one of them? If so there must be a range of models about??

I've got a similar enquiry, and came on looking for an answer LOL!
I've had a letter from EDF Energy saying that they want to change my meter.....but I'm with E On
Surely THEY should be writing to me???
Oh dear...I can feel something long and complicated thats going to make
me  coming on! I DO HOPE I haven't been taken over in error AGAIN!

The meter is not owned by the company who supplies you (otherwise they'd probably be coming along and taking them back when you switched!), but by a metering company that has a contract to cover your area. Most of the metering companies will also use sub-contractors to do the actual work, so you won't necessarily see someone arrive in an EDF van. My meter change was pretty painless - its meter moves that are an expensive disruption!0 -

You get no choice over what they fit. In some cases customer have meters 'hidden' behind kitchen cupboards which you are responsible for removing to enable them to swap the meter. You would be suprised at the things meter workers/readers find when visiting houses.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

National grid have no idea which are the oldest gas meters, they do not use serial numbers or the current gas meter reading as an indicator. Where there are multiple meters at a property, they will often pick on one of the newest when there are meters decade older at the same address. The cost of this programme is charged to your gas supplier, so you are all paying for millions of pounds worth of unneccessary gas meter changes, where you may actually get a poor, but refurbished meter in exchange AND incompetance will often mean that you continue to be charges in cubic feet even when a metric meter is fitted. Dont believe this 'leakage' or wrong reading propoganda. National Grid is just randomly trying to cover areas to show that they have 'exchanged meters'...
In addition a friend had recently had a landlords licence completed, showing no leaks - no problems. The rough work changing the meter caused a leak when a manometer test was carried out and Transco refused to turn on the supply until he paid nearly £400 for new pipework, when there was originally nothing wrong.
Look at your meter - if it looks old let them do it. If your meter is farly new, even if it is in cubic feet and if the reading isn't heading towards 9999 don't let them near it!
Martin - you should be investigating this scam work for the consumer. There probably ar many meters that need changing BUT NATIONAL GRID ISNT FINDING THEM AS THEY DONT USE AN IT SYSTEM THAT CAN. We are all being charged indirectly for this..Martin ..put a stop to it please0 -
Whilst they sometimes change the wrong meter in a block of flats this would normally be due to poor labelling which also causes 'crossed meters'. In terms of swapping out meters that dont need changing, the government are talking about mandating smart meters with a 10 year roll out programme. That will mena every gas and electric meter in the country being changed within 10 years and a lot of those will be less than 10 years old.whistleblower1973 wrote: »National grid have no idea which are the oldest gas meters, they do not use serial numbers or the current gas meter reading as an indicator.
