Renault Megane mk2 2007 starter problem

Hello, not entirely sure if this is the right sub forum for this but here goes:

I own a Renault Megane 1.6 mk2, 2007-57reg. It has done about 60k or so, and we have had the vehicle for about 3 years now.

Recently we have had issues when starting the car. It has a push button start key.

When we press brake & start the engine appears to whirr for about 10-15 seconds. This would happen 2-3 times before the engine actually successfully starts up. Sometimes when the engine whirrs, a message saying braking fault would appear on the dashboard; and the ABS light will light up also.

Is this a common issue with Renault Megane? What could be the causes/how can it be fixed?

Many Thanks

Does this only happen when its cold?

Could well be the Dephaser pulley - a common renault fault.

The pulley is around £120 and you would get it done with a timing belt change

    Get it diagnosed properly though.

Its been happening every time now for the past 2 weeks at least.

I thought it was an isolated incident one night in November when I was returning home from work; the exact same happened that night only that the engine started on the 2nd time i pressed the start button.

Today it started on the 5th attempt.

Slight embarass when I stalled on the way to work the other day; and the engine didnt start back straight away! And to compound the situation I was in London, and they aren't too patient here, even when I had hazard lights on!

Is the dephaser pulley easy to get to?

I would doubt its the dephaser pulley if it's happening when warm too. Not sure what it would be

Get the cambelt checked ASAP. Sister's car did the same. Half the teeth on the cambelt had been chewed up.

Is it easy to get to? Would a plug in of a diagnostic reader point this out though? As garages can charge just to loook at whats wrong wit a car..
