Car damaged in car park

You were side by side on a slip road entering a motorway?? Not a good tactic.
I was driving on the slip road about to join the motorway the other guy sped down the other lane of a two lane slip road and cut me up to join the motorway taking a chunk off my wing. I agree it's not a good tactic but I did not do anything wrong and he failed to recall the incident when questioned by the police..0 -
If my car had been parked near to yours and my dashcam caught the incident would the data protection act prevent me from telling you the number? This is outrageous, nonsensical and lacking in logic, I would complain.
As a private individual you are not bound by the Data Protection Act. You can safely tell anyone you want who you saw with whom and where and when.
If you were a business registered under the DPA, and came into possession of the same information, the business would be breaching the DPA if it disclosed the information without.
The DPA does not make a blanket ban on releasing information.
In any case, IIRC the DPA only applies to information relating to individuals, or which can be linked to an individual using information held by the organisation holding the data. Unless the car park has a record of every car's owner on file, the release of the registration number and the video tape to the OP would not be a breach of the DPA.
Even if the DPa did apply, I agree that in this case, it would probably be deemed to be a reasonable use of the information if it were to be disclosed in these circumstances. We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.

The Police are a disgrace,a few months ago my sons partner was driving down the M1 with my Two year Grandaughter in the back when she noticed the car in front was driving very erratic.
She kept her distance but what happened next beggars belief, the car in front went passed a junction, stopped and reversed back which made her brake and the car behind hit her and then a lorry went into them all.
Needless to say the car who caused the accident sped off and vanished, above the gantry was four camera,s so I thought we should be ok,well Police arrived after deciding who was going to attend because the accident happened on the border of three counties, they claimed nothing conclusive on the camera,s what a joke so I advised there was twelve camera,s between the junctions she had followed this idiot, they could not be bothered to even check,I was so frustrated I lost my cool and they threatened to arrest me because I would not leave the scene until I was sure my Grandaughter was going to be ok , she was in the back of an Ambulance being treated.
Their attitude was total disgrace,I have lost all faith in the police they are only interested in catching speeding motorists or the very petty criminals0 -
they were probably ANPR camera's or speed camera's , not for filming normal traffic flow0

And how does this self indulgent story help the OP?0 -
Whilst I’m not expecting a SWAT team to descend onto the owners house, I do feel a little fobbed off (in my complete novice legal opinion) especially considering all the evidence was pretty much served up to them on a plate, and If the other car was looked at there would have been paint missing at the same positions on the corner closest to my vehicle.
So what do you think?
I think I'd be slipping the car park worker £50 for the registration number of the car.
DVLA will supply you the car owners address for a modest fee (about £3).
You can then perform retribution in any way that you feel adequate. I personally would be knocking their door, with a couple of skinheads at my side, asking them to pay for the repairs, but that's just me.0 -
I just followed this up with a call back to 101 ( as that was the number quoted to call on the letter received) and after enquiring about getting the reg number from the CCTV, i was told they don't have it, i.e. never looked at it, just made an assessment by the details I provided.

It's most like an elderly person, you know the ones "never had an accident in 45 years of driving".
The carnage they leave in their wake doesn't count.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Yes, indeed. The person who hit my car in a station car park and then drove off was a male pensioner. What made it worse was that a witness had spoken to the old boy and pointed out the damage. Old boy said he'd leave his details on my windscreen. He didn't. Luckily for me the witness did leave an account of what happened so I reported it to the police. I know they paid the fine upstanding citizen a visit.0

I expect the police are short-staffed and this is below their threshold at which they will get involved. It is depressing I know.
Is there any way you can get the cctv footage that was on the DVD and from that the number plate and hence owner (from DVLA) and then take out a small claim for the damage?0
