Hi, I was declared Bankrupt on the 4th March, I have paid my Sky bill until the 28th March. I have only just discovered that they need 31 days notice for cancellations. Ive been looking for a SKY email address for the last few days but can not find one so I am going to cancel on live chat tomorrow. I am assuming that they can not charge me for another month due to me being bankrupt. I would be grateful if someone knows the answer to set my mind at rest. Thanks in advance x

Sky will try it.
Being bankrupt will really not mean a thing. You signed up to a contract.
You now want to be released from that contract, you will need to pay it.
If you are say half way through a contract you will need to pay what you owe of that contract to get out of it.
To be honest I don't like the message you are saying about not paying because you are bankrupt.
Will you say the same to the electric, water, gas and council tax.?The more I live, the more I learn.

On the date of BR, any arrears on utility bills like gas, electric and water are included by the OR - it is not a matter for the bankrupt to chose to pay or not. Most utility companies will close the bankrupts old account and any remaining balance will be included in the BR- they will then open a new account from the date of BR with a zero balance. The bankrupt then commences payments as normal.
Council Tax for the whole of the financial year in which someone goes BR, is included in the BR and the Bankrupt will not pay council tax again until the start of the new financial year. In the OP's case, as it is already the end of the financial year (give or take a week or two) they will be paying council tax from the 5th April.
Sky/internet/mobiles etc are up to the supplier. Most allow a subscriber to continue to the end of the contract but it can be difficult for BR's to renew their contracts.0 -
Thanks for your responses. I am on key meters for gas & electric and my landlord pays the water. I have been with SKY for about 10 years and thought I was doing the right thing by paying till the 28th as the payments are taken in advance, I just did not account for 31 days notice. TBH im just completely overwhelmed with it all but I did believe I had done the right thing0

...for the OP, send Sky a copy of your BR will a covering letter telling them the account will be closed due to bankrupcy - I assume the OR has not permitted your subscription as an 'allowable' expense?0

Are you paying any debt on the key meter? If so make sure the utility companies adjust the meter to stop collecting any debt. Thanks for your responses. Don't worry - you haven't done anything wrong.

no my debts were credit cards and overdraft, I will send them a copy of the BR hopefully they will let it go. Thank you x0

Probably worth phoning Sky and telling them you are BR and the contract will have to be closed and tell them you will follow it up with the letter. Tell them you expect the service to terminate on the 28th.0

I will do that tomorrow and let you know what the outcome is, thanks again I feel better now x0

Not true. The liability to pay the remainder of the contract is legally a bankruptcy debt.
If you choose to end the contract then anything left to pay under it or penalty is covered by the bankruptcy.382 “Bankruptcy debt”, etc.
