Absolutely, but what if the connecting service has no 1st class but is supposed to, are you entitled to a (partial) refund of the non 1st class part of your journey?
Yes, if it was shown in the timetable as conveying 1st class and there was no 1st class provided whatsoever, then you would be entitled to a pro-rata* compensation.

(I believe this would probably be calculated on a percentage basis, based on the mileage, rather than comparing the fares for the relevant segments of the journey, though I am uncertain on that)

If you do not have your PI number then do not book tickets using the card - you would need the PIN to collect them.
Not so, although they don't bother telling you that on the website in the section about picking up tickets; I missed out on a cheap ticket once because I had a new card but the PIN hadn't been sent yet.
In fact, you don't always even need the same card - another in your name has worked before. If you are sceptical of that, then you won't believe this: I once booked a ticket with EMT using my mother's debit card yet collected it from a machine using my own! Maybe only the surname has to be the same.
On my ticket it stipulates the train from Crew
    Really? Take a closer look!

I would guess OP meant the same as we had last week.
Our ticket was Liverpool lime street to south London.
The cheap ticket gave us a complete a - b timetable, Liverpool to Crewe to Euston, tube to Victoria then train to home.
Only part reserved was Crewe to Euston
Had two tickets one said Liverpool to south london, specified train only, but actually doesn't mention any times.

Then the second ticket said 16.30 Crewe to London Euston, and had seat numbers. Both tickets said they could only used together.

I checked at Liverpool was was told I could get any train from Liverpool to Crewe, and any train from Euston to my final destination. But I had to be on the specified train for the reserved part from Crewe to London.

So I presume that's the ticket OP referred to? When he said it stipulates the train from Crewe?

OK Technically you are correct, but what it does say on the ticket is that it must be used with a reservation and on the reservation it stipulates the train from Crew

The card does not have to be related at all. The company I work for book our tickets on line with the company credit card, We then collect them just using our own cards and have never had a problem.

It depends entirely on the company you are booking with.
They decide whether or not the original card should be presented or not. I imagine the company you work for has an account with TheTrainLine (or some other ticket seller) and it obviously makes sense for the traveller to use their own card.

It really is not a good idea to make a sweeping generalisation like "the card does not have to be related at all", when it is only based on your particular experience.

Sorry I only gave one example, I know of several friends and family who also do this. Every time the site says you must use the card that you used to purchase the tickets yet I have not come across one yet where another card has not worked. I am sure I have read on the rail forum that this works also but may be wrong on this.

The railway companies do not know your PIN, so that wouldn't be a viable check.

When you insert the card to collect a ticket, only the magstripe is read.
In fact, you don't always even need the same card
They used to do a check against the last 4 digits of the card. Since April 2014, this check is no longer being made.

The surname does not have to be the same, because the name of the cardholder is not stored on the magstrip of the card.

I am not convinced they even store the name of the cardholder? (The cardholder name does not have to match the name associated with the account on the booking site)

That's your travel ticket (in the old format, which is slowly being phased out).

    That's a reservation coupon.

Advance tickets are only valid with the accompanying reservation coupon(s).

In the new ticket format, the reservations are shown on the ticket.

Yes, the rule is that you can take appropriate train(s) to connect with the booked train(s).

    Yorkie,

Was trying to explain (not very well) to kernal as he questioned op's statement about his ticket saying from Crewe.

Do you think that somebody new to online train booking should know that?
