Gifted Money

I'm guessing, they found the book, where he logged the payments that I paid him back, that's why they knew I only owed £400 on the loan, and they must have seen his bank statements/bank account to know about the £12,000, as this was the gift.0

Which is why paying back the final £400 would be a good idea - not yet, wait until you get a formal request from whoever is dealing with the estate.0 -
Thank you very much for your response Mojisola, I can see where you are coming from. I will definitely do that, when I receive the letter. I'm devastated that it's come to this. Not only have I lost a good friend, now I'm being made to feel like some kind of fraud/leech.0

It's not uncommon for family members who feel guilty at not having done enough when their relative was alive to try to pass those bad feelings on to others - or they could just be totally greedy and angry that his good friend has been given money that they consider to be theirs.
Try to rise above their behaviour - you know you were a good friend and that you meant a lot to him.0 -
Thank you again, Mojisola
I don't have a problem paying the £400. However, I know they are going to ask for the £12,000 too. I am quite a solitary person, so hold the few friends I have dear, but this has made me not want to make any new friends, or help anybody again, in case I find myself in any further awful situations.0 -
Thank you Mojisola, I'm guessing it's the latter, because they always made excuses why they couldn't visit, and now it seems to be all about the money. I was the last person to speak with my friend before he sadly died, but they weren't interested in any of that, just emptying his home and looking for his wallet, and jewellery etc.0

It's very soon after the death of your friend - you will be upset and grieving so don't feel too awful about other people.
There are more good people in the world than bad ones.0 -
Thank you for your kind words Mojisola. I know there was a Will, but I think the first family member on the scene, who I know was not named in the will, has destroyed it, that way, the estate will be shared 50/50. I don't know if there is any way of finding out which solicitor the original is with.0

This may well be why your friend gave you the money when he did - he didn't trust his family.
Do you want to get involved with trying to prove that your friend had a will place?0 -
You're right, he told me he gave me the money when he did, because he knew what his family was like, but ironically, it's made no difference. It's infuriating that all they think about is the money, and not the loss of their family member, and the fact that he told me everything, and that's why I know there was a Will. He had a drawer, where he kept such items, yet the Will has disappeared. I don't particularly want to get involved in finding this Will, but I know it would help my situation, because it would include the truth.0
