Help! How long must a debt be 'dormant' before it is written off???

Options
Hi,

I am desperately trying to organise my finances and get debt free and improve my credit rating after years of ignoring it all :(

Brief background is that when I was a lot younger I just thought money was free and took out catalouges etc. I now believe most of those are paid off with a loan i took out to consolidate my debt... As terrible as it sounds I have pretty much ignored my debt since then! roughly 5-7 years.

I have a few questions...

How long must a debt lie dormant (ie not being acknoledged/paid etc) before it must be written off?

If a debt keeps getting sold from creditor to creditor does it ever become dormant?

What is the best debt help company out there as Im well out of my depth here and I dont know how to deal with it all.

Thanks in advance H x
